Italy's engagement against the death penalty for the
2026–2028 term focuses on pushing for a universal moratorium and the complete
abolition of capital punishment at the United Nations.
The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs coordinates this international
strategy during Italy's term as a member of the UN Human Rights Council.
Key Goals and Actions
- Universal
Moratorium: The main goal is to stop all
executions worldwide and move toward total abolition.
- UN
Resolutions: The Inter-Regional Task Force on the
Moratorium on the Use of the Death Penalty is a cross-regional coalition
of United Nations member states that works to promote the universal
abolition of capital punishment through the UN General Assembly. Italy
works with the Interregional Task Force to support and pass resolutions at
the UN General Assembly.
- Global
Dialogue: Italy raises awareness with other
countries, talks with civil society groups, and stimulates public debates

‘We have also co-sponsored a number of important
resolutions. I would just like to mention the resolution on the moratorium on
the death penalty, which passed with a very high number of votes, the highest
ever, 130 votes.’
