In ‘The Sick Man of Asia’ (http://www.foreignaffairs.com/articles/136507/yanzhong-huang/the-sick-man-of-asia) Yanzhong Huang argues that while China’s massive average annual GDP growth rate of nearly 10% since 1980 (now fallen in July, the second quarter,  2012 to7.6% due to the world recession) has lifted between 400 and 500 million people out of poverty, average life expectancy has not risen much, from 68 to 73 years, when compared with the much faster rise in other developing economies whose GDP grew at a slower rate. China faces the prospect of an aging population and an increase in a range of health problems. The state health service has become less effective while health care has become more expensive. China has made economic growth its overwhelming priority and has failed to deal with  a series of issues, such as smoking, environmental degradation and food and drug safety questions. All of these problems will have costs in terms of prospects for future growth. So the Chinese government needs to act now.
