Dictionaries

Monolingual English Dictionary

Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (OALD)

https://www.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com/definition/english/

https://www.amazon.it/Oxford-Advanced-Learners-Dictionary-dictionary/dp/0194798798
This is one of the best monolingual learner’s dictionaries of English. A learner’s dictionary gives special help with the things language learners need—irregular forms, dependent prepositions, formal/informal language, particular grammar, etc.

Bilingual  Dictionary

Use a monolingual dictionary to understand how to use new vocabulary (for example when you want to write). Use a bilingual dictionary when you need to quickly check the meaning of a specific term.

A corpus is the raw material of dictionaries. Look up any word or expression to see examples of how it combines with other words in native-speaker English.

Sites where you can study English

Here is a site where you can check and practice grammar structures:
http://www.ego4u.com/en/cram-up/grammar
(from here you can also access reading and other resources)
There is also:

http://www.vivquarry.com/wkshts/grammar.html

http://vivquarry.com/wkshts/
e.g.
http://vivquarry.com/wkshts/linkwd2.html
and
http://esl.about.com/od/writingadvanced/a/wc_addition.htm
but I think the best sites are:

Exam English Free Practice Tests for learners of English

http://examenglish.com/cambridge_esol.php
for lots of free practice material at different levels (about this more later)

for example:

https://www.examenglish.com/IELTS/IELTS_general_reading1.htm
and
BBC Learning English
http://www.bbc.co.uk/learningenglish new address
and
http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish/general/  old address (but still active)
you should explore the site. For example:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/learningenglish/english/features/6-minute-english

http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish/general/sixminute/

is for listening practice and dictation              http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish/language/

is for grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation

Other sites where you can practice English

iTunes U (via iTunes , which you must install)
https://podcasts.apple.com/us/genre/podcasts-education/id1304
for podcasts of university lectures and courses and to see how your subject is taught in English. For example, I looked at international relations:

TV Channels

The aim here is to listen and improve your comprehension, stay up to date (so you should also follow the telegiornale in Italian) and absorb some of the language.

BBC

France 24 in English

A little light translation!

Don’t forget, if you need to expand your knowledge of basic vocabulary, go to the EU site where you will find this document (156 pages) to download in Italian, English and maybe your second language too.

The EU in 2022

https://op.europa.eu/webpub/com/general-report-2022/it/

https://op.europa.eu/webpub/com/general-report-2022/en/

download here in both Italian and English

https://op.europa.eu/en/publication-detail/-/publication/d73b364e-c180-11ed-8912-01aa75ed71a1/language-en/format-PDF/source-291769284

This will give you 128 pages of Italian to translate into English! To check your translation just move between the Italian and English version and take notes on regular language usage:

The EU in 2021

https://op.europa.eu/webpub/com/general-report-2021/it/

https://op.europa.eu/webpub/com/general-report-2021/en/

download here:

https://op.europa.eu/en/publication-detail/-/publication/92b9b0d3-9e14-11ec-83e1-01aa75ed71a1

The EU in 2020

file:///C:/Users/HP/Downloads/the%20eu%20in%202020-NAAD21001ENN.pdf

The EU in 2019

And then the 2018 EU General Report (154 pages)

https://publications.europa.eu/it/publication-detail/-/publication/292fd37c-30d8-11e9-8d04-01aa75ed71a1/language-it/format-PDF/source-103848005

then download the pdf format

and differences. You can also download the French, Spanish or German versions.

And here's the 2017 General Report (130 pages)

https://publications.europa.eu/it/publication-detail/-/publication/4d16193a-25a7-11e8-ac73-01aa75ed71a1/language-it/format-PDF/source-103848083

And here's the 2016 General Report (104 pages)

https://publications.europa.eu/it/publication-detail/-/publication/99c8732c-094a-11e7-8a35-01aa75ed71a1/language-en

You can also get the General Reports for 2015 (96 pages) and 2014 (288 pages!)

https://publications.europa.eu/en/publication-detail/-/publication/db649a28-e42e-11e5-8a50-01aa75ed71a1/language-en/format-PDF/source-75768461

https://publications.europa.eu/en/publication-detail/-/publication/beafd525-4bc8-468c-9342-69041fb04e0f/language-en

If you prefer, you can go straight to the English version of the EU in 2021 text or other texts on the EU site or UN site and simply start taking notes on common expressions used in diplomatic English. See my future post about the UN website for a little more information about how to get documents.

The Council of the EU centre for press releases is another site where you can do more translation:

https://www.consilium.europa.eu/it/press/press-releases/

for example:

https://www.consilium.europa.eu/it/press/press-releases/2022/03/15/russia-s-military-aggression-against-ukraine-fourth-eu-package-of-sectoral-and-individual-measures/

and then changing the language to English at the top of the page on the right:

https://www.consilium.europa.eu/en/press/press-releases/2022/03/15/russia-s-military-aggression-against-ukraine-fourth-eu-package-of-sectoral-and-individual-measures/

The UN

There is also the UN Annual Report 2022 for note-taking on the language, unless you want to translate from French or Spanish into English!
